WELCOME TO BAYOU ORCHIDS. Our e-nursery specializes in plants that will grow easily, so that the hobbyist can maximize the
pleasure/pain ratio. We won't sell you a 2" pot from one of our 85
climate-controlled greenhouses inherited from 5 generations of orchid growers.
We have been through this ourselves, having started growing orchids u nder lights
in our Brooklyn apartment during my surgical training years in the 1960s. One
sunny weekend afternoon in April we drove to Summit, New Jersey to visit with John
B. Lager of Lager
& Hurrell, one of the very first
commercial orchid growing firms in the U.S. With the intoxicating
fragrance of the Cattleyas and the huge sprays of bright yellow oncidiums dancing in
the warm Spring sunlight, we were hooked!! As we moved around America, we dragged plants from New York City, to New
Orleans LA, Whittier CA, and are now growing in Ft. Pierce, Florida, on the
Indian River Lagoon. Our plants are growing outside with minimal attention
except for varying amounts of shade and fertilizer, in mixes
recommended by the best hybridizers and commercial growers in the Country. We
sell you, what works for us, but you must wander around the greenhouses of the
best growers in your geographic area, join the local orchid clubs, become an orchid judge, or at least sign -up to
become one, and pick brains until you can determine what works for you. Do
not spend $200 on that FCC Cattleya violacea 'Muse' original plant division until you have a
well-tested game plan. We have ordered from everyone, opened their flasks, and
received well growing plants in compots that may or may not prosper where we
live. Primary Sophronitis hybrids just don't like growing in the constant heat
and humidity of Southern Florida, for example. Certain crosses just won't grow
here or for you; it's too hot, too dry, too wet, too sunny.... etc. So become
the local expert on what works for you, and we’ll try to help you out. GOOD
LUCK!!
